2019 Hyundai Santa Fe due mid-2018, price rise likely

Prices to rise for next-generation SUV

Hyundai is set to bring in an all-new Santa Fe later this year, and the company admits that it won’t be able to keep its prices quite as sharp as the current model.

In 2017, Hyundai sold 7974 Santa Fe SUVs in our market, up from 7834 the year before. The company's local arm expects the transition from existing to new-generation Santa Fe to go much smoother than the same process went for the i30 hatchback last year, partially because the Santa Fe is in a growing segment rather than a shrinking one.

Nonetheless, and much like the previous i30 (which had very aggressive pricing towards the end of its life), the new Santa Fe won’t be able to match the current car's attractive pricing.

Speaking to media at the Detroit motor show, Hyundai Australia's chief operating officer, Scott Grant, confirmed a price increase for the new model.

“No,” Grant said in response to whether the new large SUV will maintain current prices.

“It’s a good time for buyers to jump in I suspect, that’s what happens when you get into the fifth year of the cycle.”

Hyundai Australia has ‘good stock’ levels of the current Santa Fe, which should see it through to the middle of the year when the company expects the new Santa Fe to arrive in showrooms.

“We are pushing that car out and it does well for us generally. We have very high levels of customer satisfaction with the vehicle so it’s still doing quite well," he said.

"We are trying to keep our [market] share and keep it at the pointy end. With the new model the price is not set but I don’t think it will be as sharp as the current one.”

The new model will also be slightly larger, as it’s based on the same platform as the freshly-updated Kia Sorento.

It’s more than likely to adapt some of the design elements of the recently-launched Kona baby SUV whilst maintaining its 5+2 seating layout. Nonetheless, a V6 petrol will not be available from launch - unlike the Sorento, which offers both petrol and diesel powertrains.

The Santa Fe will be joined by a facelifted Tucson (above) later in 2018, with even more SUVs from the Korean brand planned in the near-future.
