2019 Ford Edge ST revealed – UPDATE

Twin-turbo SUV a no-go for Australia

Update: We've updated the image gallery with more high-resolution images

This is the 2019 Ford Edge ST. We'll know the Edge as the Ford Endura, but while Oz gets a family-focused diesel powertrain, the American market's new hero model will be packing a powerful petrol engine tweaked by Ford Performance.

But, while Australia won't get the Edge ST (Endura ST?) or any other petrol variant, we can expect our local models to wear the same styling worn by the sub-ST models shown in this article's gallery. Watch for those to land in the fourth quarter of 2018.

As for the overseas Edge ST, power is provided by the 2.7-litre turbocharged V6 Ecoboost petrol engine found in the Edge Sport and Fusion Sport, dialed up to 355 horsepower (264kW) and 380lb-ft of torque (515Nm) - that's 20hp (15kW) and 40Nm more than in the Sport.

Drive is sent to the ground via a "quick-shifting" eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system with selectable traction control.

A new Sport mode gives more aggressive throttle response and shifting - the latter holding gears near the redline - along with a "more resonant" exhaust note. There's also steering-mounted paddle shifters to allow for manual shifts where desired.

Performance figures are yet to be finalised, though it's expected the Edge ST will better the 6.2-second 0-60mph (0-96km/h) acceleration time of the Edge Sport.

Compared to the Edge Sport, the ST gains the option of a more focused performance brake package, along with ST-tuned sports suspension.

Visually, the Edge ST gets unique front and rear styling, with more aggressive grille and bumper treatments front and rear, unique dual exhaust outlets, a unique 21-inch wheel options, along with ST-branded badging inside and out.

Like the wider line-up, the Edge ST gets an array of driver-assistance technologies and safety systems, including forward-collision warning with dynamic brake support, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, auto high beam, and hill-start assist.

The 2019 model-year Edge also introduces several segment-first and Ford-first features, described by Ford as:

  • Post-Collision Braking: Helps reduce the impact of a potential secondary collision by automatically applying moderate brake pressure when an initial collision event is detected; slowing the vehicle can potentially lessen injury to occupants and damage to the vehicle
  • Evasive Steering Assist: Helps drivers steer around stopped or slower vehicles to help avoid collisions. Designed to operate at city and highway speeds, it uses radar and a camera to detect slower-moving and stationary vehicles ahead and provides steering support to enable drivers to maneuver around a vehicle if a collision is imminent
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Lane Centering: Helps the vehicle maintain a comfortable driving distance from vehicles ahead and helps reduce stress during long, light-traffic road trips by helping keep the vehicle centered in its lane

The Ford Edge ST will go on display at the Detroit motor show next week. Stay tuned for more details during the event.

Meanwhile, the standard Ford Edge range sees a facelift for the 2019 model year, bringing an new front and rear treatments, upgraded LED lighting all-round, new colour choices and revised alloy wheel designs.

There's also a revised 2.0-litre Ecoboost turbo petrol that gets a slight power bump, pushing outputs to 250hp (186kW) and 275lb-ft (373Nm).

Minor upgrades have been carried out in the cabin, too. For 2019 the Edge gains a redesigned centre console with a rotary gear-shift dial a-la Jaguar Land Rover, FordPass Connect as standard with a WiFi hotspot, the availability of wireless phone charging, and the availability of a new 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen Play premium audio system.

Australia

Unfortunately for us rev-head Aussies, it appears the Edge ST is an unlikely starter for our market.

Speaking with CarAdvice, product communications manager for Ford Australia, Damion Smy, said: "No. We have confirmed that the Endura will offer a dedicated diesel line-up with five-seat configuration. Further Australian specification and details will be announced closer to launch".

The likely reason is that the 2.7-litre Ecoboost V6 is currently only engineered for left-hand drive models, hence why we don't get the Edge Sport or the Fusion (Mondeo) Sport in Australia.

However, we can expect the regular 2019 Edge range to be indicative of the Oz-bound Endura, though pricing and specifications for our market will obviously be revealed closer to launch in the fourth quarter of 2018.
