Ford Mustang Bullitt firming for Detroit debut

The rumoured Ford Mustang Bullitt looks set to make its debut at the 2018 Detroit motor show next week, according to a new report by industry journal, Automotive News.

According to the article, an unnamed source says the Mustang Bullitt will be revealed as a 2018 model to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Steve McQueen film of the same name, which helped to make the 'Stang a hit among enthusiasts in the late 1960s.

Spy photos recently surfaced of a unique-looking Mustang last month during a promotional shoot, with special badging, paint and wheels sparking rumours that Ford is reviving the Bullitt nameplate - a popular special edition of Mustangs past.

The 'crosshair' badging on the boot and green paintwork are key cues of the Bullitt Mustang, while the back 'Torq Thrust' alloy wheels with chrome wheels are not currently available on the 2018 Mustang in the US.

Ford is yet to confirm the existence of such a model, though a dealership window sticker (above) has surfaced online supposedly confirming the vehicle's details, and now the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction site has listed a "special new Ford Mustang" that will go under the hammer on January 19 - the accompanying image resembles a 1968 Mustang, the same model used in the Bullitt film.

The facelifted Ford Mustang isn't due to launch Down Under until the second half of 2018, and it appears unlikely the Bullitt edition will make it here since in the past it's been reserved for the US market.

However, last November a 2018 Mustang was spotted in Melbourne, likely testing on Aussie roads ahead of its upcoming release.

Speaking with CarAdvice, Damion Smy, product communications manager for Ford Australia, said the company is always looking for new editions of the iconic pony car given its success here, though couldn't confirm whether the Bullitt is one of those models.

"Regarding any kind of performance model or special edition: Given the appeal that Mustang has in Australia, we’re constantly evaluating global offerings for Mustang in order to provide Australian customers the best possible line-up," he said.

We're expecting the facelifted Mustang to land in Australia during the second half of 2018.
