Toyota FT-AC Concept heading for production

The rugged Toyota FT-AC Concept seems set for production, albeit at an unconfirmed date.

Recently, AutoGuide asked Jack Hollis, general manager of Toyota in North America, about whether the FT-AC Concept would make its way to production.

Hollis brought up the FJ Cruiser in response, a car which debuted as a concept at the 2005 Detroit motor show.

“Customer feedback was so strong, what did we do?" Hollis asked rhetorically. "Got the product out in about two years that looked almost identical to the product we brought out on stage. I would put FT-AC in a similar boat.”

With the company already hard at work on replacements for the RAV4 crossover and Corolla small car, Hollis confirmed the company is also looking towards a next generation of its Tundra pickup truck.

The current model dates back to 2006, but is doing steady business for Toyota, with around 110,000 sold in 2017.

That puts it well behind the Ford F-Series, which racked up 807,379 sales to the end of November 2017. In the same period, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra found 709,695 buyers, while the Ram pickup sold 455,816 units.

Even though the Nissan Titan is significantly newer, it only managed 47,342 sales until the end of November last year.
