Morgan EV3 set for production next year

Morgan has unveiled a road-ready EV3, with production set to begin in the third quarter of 2018.

The pure-electric EV3 was initially unveiled in pre-production trim at the 2016 Geneva motor show. Although Steve Morris, Morgan managing director, suggested a production model was on the cards, there was no concrete confirmation.

In production form, the car will be powered by a liquid-cooled electric motor with 42kW, fed by a 21kWh battery pack. Given the regular 3-Wheeler makes a lofty 60kW from its V-twin engine, the EV3 is likely to be slower than its petrol-powered counterpart. Range will sit at 190km.

It will also, however, be lighter than the old-fashioned petrol car. Where the 3 Wheeler tips the scales at 525kg, the EV3 should dip under 500kg thanks to lightweight composite body panels – a first for Morgan.

Official performance figures haven't been announced yet, but the concept promised a 9.0-second run to 100km/h and a top speed somewhere around 150km/h. Don't expect the production car to deviate too far from that mark.

Externally, the EV3 features a more streamlined (almost steampunk) look than the 3 Wheeler, with a funky triple-headlight design and gold detailing on the grille.

The retro-futuristic theme continues inside, where there's a 'magneto' switch in place of a gear selector, along with swathes of aluminium, brass and wood trim. There's also a digital display in the car, which seems necessary but also at odds with the aero- or cafe-racer inspired styling elsewhere.

Production of the EV3 will start in the third quarter of 2018. Morgan has reportedly taken 60 deposits on the car, which is being put through pre-production tests. At the moment, it seems like production won't be capped, either.

We've contacted Morgan to see if the car will be coming Down Under, so stay tuned. Signs are good, though.

When we first covered the concept, the company told CarAdvice it plans to ADR homologate the car, and said the production version will look different to the show car.
