2019 Chevrolet Silverado Revealed

Big ute gets an overhaul ahead of local arrival

Chevrolet has revealed its 2019 Silverado pick-up truck ahead of an official unveil at the 2018 North American International Auto Show next month.

The bow-tie brand's Ford F-150 rival was shown at the Chevy Truck Centennial in Texas over the weekend and while details remain scant, the next-generation Silverado previews the utility's new styling direction.

The latest design brings a bigger grille upfront surrounded by a heavily revised front-end with DRL headlamps and a more compact and contemporary bumper design incorporating thinner indicators. Around back, the tailgate is emblazoned with 'Chevrolet' while the bumper has recessed steps for access to the tray.

Chevrolet’s best-selling model is expected to retain most of its steel body and chassis parts though some panels are expected to be aluminium in a bid to increase efficiency and performance. However, the Chevrolet will retain a rolled-steel bed floor unlike the all-aluminium F-150 that has been a poking-point for Chevy in its latest ads.

Drive

The model revealed in the pictures is the Silverado LT Trailboss, which will be one of eight models to enter the new line-up and gets the off-road Z71 package with two-inch lift as standard. No engine and transmission options have been detailed yet but it is expected the new utes will have a greater variety of driveline options, including two different capacity V8s, a turbo four-cylinder, 4.3-litre V6 and choice of either an eight-speed or new ten-speed automatic transmission co-developed with Ford.

It's also expected to come in either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive layout and feature a similar body on frame construction with leaf sprung live rear axle as the current five-year old generation.

The next-gen Silverado is based on GM’s new T1XX architecture that will underpin all of its future full-size trucks and large SUVs. It has not been confirmed if T1XX architecture supports factory right-hand drive production like GM’s D2XX (Chevrolet/Holden Equinox), C1XX (upcoming GMC/Holden Acadia) and the new A2XX which will underpin the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac vehicles, opening the door for new vehicles that might be imported in right-hand drive from factory by Holden.

Until then, Holden partner HSV will be importing and converting both the current Chevrolet Silverado and Camaro, with production expected to reach 600 and 1000 units per year respectively. But HSV will not be offering the Silverado 1500, instead opting to bring in the larger 2500 and 3500 work trucks which offer up to 6.1 tonne towing capacity, thanks in part to a 6.6-litre turbocharged diesel V8 that produces 332kW of power and 1234Nm of torque.

The Chevrolet Silverado from HSV will be available from April 2018 with full pricing and specifications yet to be revealed.
