Jeep expects Australia to be world number two for Grand Cherokee Trackhawk sales

Jeep reckons Australia has a shot at being the world’s second-biggest market for the manic $134,900 (plus on-roads) Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, behind its native US.

About 200 Australians have already put their money down, with the first 62 special edition models selling out in three weeks, before pricing was even announced.

We do love our performance cars here, and V8 sales are proportionately enormous. Just ask brands as diverse as Holden and Mercedes-AMG (and not Greenpeace).

"We don't have limitations [such as CAFE average fuel economy standards] like other countries do, we can bring in as many as we want," said Jeep Australia's president and CEO, Steve Zanlunghi.

"Because the country loves V8s, petrol-heads, we think we will be probably the second-largest country in the world outside of the US," he added.

Background

The Trackhawk gets the 6.2-litre supercharged Hemi V8 engine from the Challenger and Charger Hellcat, with a terrifying 522kW and 868Nm.

This puts it behind only the Ferrari 812 Superfast and Lamborghini Aventador S for power, and equal to the (1017Nm) Bentley Continental Supersports. That said, the Tesla Model X electric SUV has more torque.

The $135k Trackhawk is $44,000 pricer than the former range-topper, the SRT, which will remain on sale concurrently, still powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi making a meagre 344kW/624Nm.

Matched to the Trackhawk’s supercharged V8 is an eight-speed ‘TorqueFlite’ eight-speed automatic gearbox that would want to be properly tough.

Jeep claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.7 seconds – six-tenths slower than a Model X P100D, but equal to a 991 series Porsche 911 4 GTS – and a top speed of 289km/h. Not bad for a 2.3-tonne shed.

Oh, it also uses a claimed 16.8 litres of fuel per 100km on the combined cycle. If you’re stuck on Punt Rd at 8am, you won’t see below 20s…
