Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk lobs at $135k

Jeep is rolling out Australia’s third most powerful new vehicle - behind the Ferrari 812 Superfast and Lamborghini Aventador S - priced at $134,900 before on-roads.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk gets the 6.2-litre supercharged Hemi V8 engine from the Challenger and Charger Hellcat, with a terrifying 522kW and 868Nm.

This puts it behind only the Ferrari 812 Superfast and Lamborghini Aventador S, and equal to the (1017Nm) Bentley Continental Supersports. That said, the Tesla Model X electric SUV has more torque.

The Trackhawk is thus $44,000 pricer than the former range-topper, the SRT, which will remain on sale concurrently, still powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi making a meagre 344kW/624Nm.

About 200 Australians have already put their money down.

Given the company had projected a price point of about $140k, it's about bang-on.

Matched to the Trackhawk’s supercharged V8 is an eight-speed ‘TorqueFlite’ eight-speed automatic gearbox that would want to be properly tough.

Jeep claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.7 seconds - six-tenths slower than a Model X P100D, but equal to a 991 series Porsche 911 4 GTS - and a top speed of 289km/h. Not bad for a 2.3-tonne shed.

Oh, it also uses a claimed 16.8 litres of fuel per 100km on the combined cycle. If you’re stuck on Punt Rd at 8am, you won’t see below 20s…

FCA reckons you’ll do the standing quarter mile in 11.6 seconds (at 186km/h), manage a 100km/h-0 braking distance of 37m, and hit .88g on the skid pan. We’re looking forward to taking one to the AARC proving ground and finding out.

Aesthetically, the Trackhawk gets a unique front fascia featuring larger air dams for better cooling, a distinctive bonnet with dual vents, aggressive flared wheel arches, a gloss black rear valence and Trackhawk badges.

On the inside, the Trackhawk’s chrome-and-carbon-fibre cabin has a three-spoke flat bottom steering wheel, paddle shifters, and Nappa leather seats with heating and cooling.

“After months of anticipation, I’m elated to announce the Trackhawk has landed,” said Jeep Australia president and CEO Steve Zanlunghi.

“The Grand Cherokee Trackhawk not only sets new standards in the Australian SUV market, but the overall performance car market. In terms of value for money in the performance segment, it will be difficult to find anything else that comes close.”

Zanlunghi said the initial Australian launch allocation of 62 units (homage to the 6.2-litre engine capacity) were now sold. All told, about 200 units are accounted for pre-launch.

“As soon as we announced that the Trackhawk was destined for Australia, our dealers were inundated with enquiry and started taking orders,” he said.
