Renault unveils new 1.3-litre turbocharged engine
Renault has unveiled a new petrol engine, developed in tandem with Daimler and alliance partner Nissan.
The new 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol mill will debut in the Scenic and Grand Scenic in Europe, with three separate trim levels offered: Energy TCe 115, Energy TCe 140 and Energy TCe 160.
As you may have guessed, the first listed trim makes 115hp (86kW) of power and 220Nm of torque, offered exclusively with a manual transmission, while the 140hp (104kW)/240Nm and 160hp (119kW) models can be specced with a manual (260Nm) or dual-clutch transmission (270Nm).
According to Renault, the engine makes use of numerous Nissan-Renault 'innovations' including Bore Spray Coating, designed to cut friction in the cylinder, and a high-pressure fuel-injection system working at 250bar.
A unique combustion chamber is aimed at improving the air/fuel mixture, and a 'dual variable camshaft timing' system to vary the intake and exhaust valves depending on engine load.
The new result, according to the company, is better low-down torque and a more linear build through the rev range.
"Our new petrol engine embodies all the expertise of Groupe Renault’s engineers, the Alliance and our partner Daimler," said Philippe Brunet, global VP for powertrains and electric vehicles, Renault-Nissan Alliance.
"It meets the quality standards of both the Alliance and Daimler, with more than 40,000 hours of testing. Compared with the Energy TCe 130, the new Energy TCe 140 delivers 35Nm additional peak torque which is available across a broader rev band, from 1500rpm to 3500rpm."
The new engine will debut in the Renault Scenic and Grand Scenic in Europe, before rolling out to the wider range throughout 2018.
