FCA in partnership talks with Hyundai

Fiat Chrysler is discussing with Hyundai regarding hydrogen fuel-cell technologies and vehicle transmissions.

Fiat Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne, spilt the beans to Bloomberg while speaking to media at the launch of Alfa Romeo's return to Formula One.

Marchionne highlighted the "potential of a technical partnership with Hyundai" to develop transmissions and hydrogen technology. Hyundai already supplies Fiat Chrysler with some components and transmissions.

"We welcome the interest from other automakers in our advanced transmissions and hydrogen-powered technologies," Hyundai said in an email to Bloomberg.

Next year, Hyundai will formally launch its next-generation fuel cell vehicle as a follow up to the ix35 Fuel Cell. Based on the FE concept, the new crossover will have between 560 and 800km of range, and around 120kW of power.

The new fuel cell SUV will take on the Toyota Mirai and Honda Clarity, in a segment hamstrung by a lack of infrastructure.

Fiat Chrysler has yet to market a product fuel cell car. Its electric efforts have primarily been limited to the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid people mover and the Fiat 500e hatch, a car Marchionne once asked punters not to buy.

The company plans on launching a plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler in 2020.
