2018 Lamborghini Urus revealed

Official details of Italian brand’s high-performance ‘Super SUV’.

A 478kW twin-turbo V8 engine, Formula One-style carbon ceramic brakes and 23-inch alloy wheels - the Lamborghini Urus is not your typical SUV.

The Italian brand revealed its long-awaited new SUV at an all-new factory built at its Sant'Agata headquarters to produce the critical new machine. It’s the second in the brand’s history following the short-lived LM002 in the 1980s.

It arrives as SUV sales, particularly in the luxury segment, continue to grow and Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali said at the launch he is confident the Urus will double the brand’s sales by 2019. The Urus is due to go on sale in Europe, America and Asia in early 2018.

Drive

First previewed as a concept at the 2012 Shanghai motor show, the production Urus retains a striking Lamborghini style. While based on the same MLB underpinnings as the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini’s designers have given it a unique look.

“The Lamborghini Urus is a visionary approach based on the infusion of Lamborghini DNA into the most versatile vehicle, the SUV,” said Domenicali. “The Urus elevates the SUV to a level not previously possible, the Super SUV. It is a true Lamborghini in terms of design, performance, driving dynamics and emotion as well as drivable every day in a range of environments.”

Under the bonnet is the Porsche developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine. In the Urus it’s tuned to produce 478kW of power and 850Nm of torque, enough for Lamborghini to claim the best power-to-weight ratio for its class.

It’s enough performance for the Urus to sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.6secs and 0-200km/h in 12.8secs. Top speed is a claimed 305km/h, which makes it the fastest production SUV.

The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system. For a sporty drive, in keeping in the spirit of the brand, with a standard 40/60 front/rear torque split. But when needed the all-wheel system can send up to 70 per cent of drive to the front or 87 per cent to the rear.

Another element of the all-wheel drive system is an expanded range of drive modes, selected via the ‘Tamburo’ switch. In addition to the usual Strada, Sport and Corsa modes familiar from the Huracan and Aventador, the Urus also has Neve (snow), Terra (off-road) and Sabbia (sand) modes in case owners want to take the machine on unsealed roads.

The Urus features the same rear-wheel steering system from the Aventador S for more responsive handling at high speeds and better maneuverability at low speeds.

The Urus rides on 21-inch alloy wheels as standard but can also be had with huge 23-inch rims.

Inside those alloys are standard carbon ceramic brakes, the biggest available measuring 440x40mm at the front and 370x30mm at the rear.

In Lamborghini tradition Urus gets its name from a bull, specifically a large, wild ancestor of today’s modern fighting bulls.
