2018 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 convertible unveiled

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 convertible made its public debut overnight, under lights at the 2017 Los Angeles motor show.

The first drop-top Corvette ZR1 since 1970, the latest ZR1 convertible weighs 27-kilograms more than its fixed roof relative.

According to Chevrolet, most of this is down to the folding roof mechanism, which can be operated remotely and works at driving speeds up to 48km/h (30mph).

Based on the recently revealed ZR1 coupe, the high performance convertible features the same 6.2-litre supercharged LT5 V8 engine, which churns out 563kW of power and 969Nm of torque.

This is all sent to the rear wheels via either a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. In preliminary testing, the automatic ZR1 convertible has a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of under three seconds, a quarter mile (400m) time in the low 10-second range, and a top speed in excess of 200mph (322km/h).

There's also an optional ZTK Performance Package, which includes front splitters, an adjustable high-rise rear wing, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, and retuned suspension.

The Corvette ZR1 convertible goes on sale during the second quarter of 2018 in America, priced from US$123,995 ($162,700) – a US$4000 ($5250) premium over the ZR1 coupe.
