Skoda to launch five EVs by 2025

First electrified model to arrive in 2019, first EV lobbing in 2020

Skoda has announced plans to offer five electric vehicles (EV) by 2025, along with its first plug-in hybrid in 2019.

In a new release, the Czech subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group confirmed it is planning five EV models across "various segments", with the first model in this new electric family to be built in the Czech Republic.

"This decision underlines the Group’s confidence in the Skoda workforce. This is an important step for the future of the Skoda brand and the Czech Republic as an automotive location," said Bernhard Maier, CEO for Skoda Auto.

"We are pleased that the first all-electric ŠKODA will be built in the Czech Republic.

The Mlada Boleslav manufacturing facility is also set to produce components for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models "as early as 2019", with the first electrified model - a PHEV version of its Superb mid-sizer - also scheduled for launch in 2019.

Meanwhile, Skoda's first EV will roll down the Mlada Boleslav production line in 2020, though it's unclear what form this vehicle could take.

A likely result will be a production version of the Vision E concept (pictured) shown at this year's Shanghai motor show, which was a coupe-styled crossover with a pure-electric drivetrain and autonomous driving systems.

Other developments planned for the next decade include the digitisation of the company's products and purposes, along with expanding Skoda's business areas "from traditional automotive engineering to a wide range of mobility services" - which likely hints at ride-sharing services and autonomous vehicle projects.
