2018 Infiniti QX50 revealed, confirmed for Oz – UPDATE

UPDATE: Infiniti has officially detailed the QX50 ahead of its debut in LA. See article for details.

The 2018 Infiniti QX50 has been revealed in a single image ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles motor show next week.

The single frontal image doesn't offer any surprises, looking very much like a toned-down version of the QX50 concept revealed at the Detroit motor show earlier this year (below).

Measuring 4693mm long, 1903mm wide, 1679mm tall with a 2800mm wheelbase, the QX50 is 37mm longer, 13mm wider and 40mm taller than a Mercedes-Benz GLC, though offers 73mm less room between the axles.

Set to rival the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and the aforementioned GLC, the second-generation Infiniti QX50 will feature the world's first variable-compression petrol engine, said to offer diesel-rivalling fuel economy while offering class-leading performance.

The 2.0-litre variable-compression turbo four has outputs rated at 200kW and 390Nm, making it comparable to the outgoing car's 242kW/361Nm 3.7-litre aspirated V6.

With all-wheel drive, the QX50 can sprint from 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in 6.3 seconds (6.7 seconds FWD), which doesn't quite match the BMW X3 xDrive30i's claim of 6.0 seconds - nor does it live up to the company's claim that it would be "nearly a second" quicker than its four-cylinder rivals.

Front-wheel drive versions of the QX50 VC-T offer a 35 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the outgoing petrol V6, while all-wheel-driven variants see a 30 per cent economy gain. The new engine will be mated as standard to a continuously-variable transmission (CVT).

We're yet to see what the rear and interior look like, so stay tuned for an update once the QX50 is fully revealed.

The QX50 is based on an all-new platform that allows for improved refinement, rigidity and interior space. Infiniti says the new model sports a torsional rigidity improvement of 23 per cent over the current car.

Behind the second row of seats is an 895-litre luggage area (or 1048L with the rear bench slid forward), expanding to 1699L with them folded. The company says with all seats in place, the QX50 can fit three golf bags and a pram stored lengthways with space to spare.

Those figures rival vehicles in the segment above, such as the BMW X5 (650L/1870L) and Audi Q7 (700L/1955L).

Also featuring in the all-new SUV are the company's latest ProPilot driver-assistance technologies that enable the QX50 to accelerate, brake and steer autonomously during single-lane highway driving.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice, Tony Mee, corporate communications manager for Infiniti's local division, confirmed an Australian launch for the QX50.

Exact timing is still to be detailed, though Mee said "potentially a late-2018 arrival".
