2018 BMW M5 pricing and specs

Manic M sedan here in Q2 2018 from $199,900

Australian pricing and specifications for the all-new 2018 BMW M5 range have been revealed this week, with the super sedan to kick off from $199,900 plus on-road costs.

When it lobs Down Under in the second quarter of 2018, the M5 will be offered in two special launch variants; the Launch Edition and the First Edition.

The Launch Edition is essentially the first allocation of the 'F90' M5 for Australia, with just 50 units available for 2018.

Priced from $199,900 before ORCs, the Launch Edition (pictured in blue) comes equipped with the semi-autonomous Driving Assistant Plus - which includes tech like adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function, lane-keep assist, front and rear cross-traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) - along with Parking Assistant Plus; featuring automated parking, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround camera system.

Other highlights include 20-inch M light alloy wheels wrapped in 275/35 front and 285/35 rear tyres, adaptive LED headlights with Selective Beam, LED daytime-running lights, Merino leather interior trim and an Anthracite headliner.

If that isn't enough, buyers can opt for the Indulgence Package ($8000), Innovations Package ($3500) or a range of single-item cost options.

The Indulgence Package adds a soft-close function for the doors, massaging front seats, a TV tuner, and a dual-10.2-inch rear entertainment system with Blu-Ray players - perfect for keeping the kids entertained when you're hammering along.

Meanwhile, the Innovations Package adds roller sunblinds, ventilated front seats, four-zone climate control, the Ambient Air package and gesture control for the infotainment system.

For those wanting a little more exclusivity there's the First Edition (above), starting at $229,900 plus ORCs.

Just five of these eye-catching sedans will make it to Australia, out of a run of 400 units globally.

Compared to the 'standard' M5, the First Edition gets unique 'Frozen Dark Red' metallic exterior paint, gloss-black exterior highlights and wheels, a carbon-fibre engine cover, 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, both the Indulgence and Innovations Packages, along with unique interior floor mats in black with white piping and red stitching.

The First Edition also gets special BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in Smoke White with red contrast stitching, along with BMW Individual Piano Black interior trims.

Under the bonnet of all BMW M5 variants is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 developing a meaty 441kW of power and 750Nm of torque, mated as standard to a quick-shifting eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission.

Drive is sent to the ground through an M xDrive rear-biased all-wheel drive system, which also features a rear Active M Differential.

The 0-100km/h sprint is dealt with in a claimed 3.4 seconds, on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h. With the M Driver's Packaged specified, the M5 is capable of reaching 305km/h.

Fuel use, meanwhile, is rated at 10.5L/100km on the combined cycle - but who's going to care about that anyway?

Compared to its most direct rival, the Mercedes-AMG E63, the M5 is nearly $10,000 more affordable than the standard variant, while undercutting the top-spec AMG E63 S by a massive $40,000 while offering equivalent performance.

The all-new BMW M5 will be "available in Australia" from Q2, 2018.
