2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast variant spied testing on the streets of New York City

Eagle-eyed CarAdvice contributor Derek Fung has spotted Ferrari testing a variant of the Ferrari 812 Superfast on the streets of New York City this morning.

On first glance, the vehicle in these images appears to be a bog standard 812 Superfast wearing a funky camouflage, which could indicate that it's undergoing homologation testing for the US market.

But, the vehicle could also be testing new technology for the brand and could be the initial basis for the confirmed Ferrari SUV.

In a press conference at the New York Stock Exchange in October, Marchionne said the company is “dead serious” about what it calls an “FUV” model – short for ‘Ferrari Utility Vehicle’.

The new sports crossover will be the sole four-door offering in the company’s line-up, though it will be produced in limited numbers to ensure it stays exclusive.

“We need to learn how to master this whole new relationship between exclusivity and scarcity of product, then we’re going to balance this desire to grow with a widening of the product portfolio,” Marchionne said.

Looking closer at parts of the stuck on camouflage, it's clear that the car is red beneath the skin, with the wrap sitting on top of the paint.

Whether this is just a homologation vehicle for the US market, or the early signs of Ferrari's SUV product, it's great to see Ferrari using the bustling streets of New York City for testing.
