2018 Ford Mustang: Faster, louder and safer Mustang has landed in Oz

The 2018 Ford Mustang has landed in Oz, with a CarAdvice reader spotting a blue 2018 Mustang testing on Melbourne roads.

While the sixth-generation Mustang was launched in 2015, this mid-life update brings with it a fresh design, more power, more noise and much-needed safety features.

Power figures are yet to be confirmed for Australia but as a reference, the revised 5.0-litre V8 engine produces 343kW of power and 570Nm of torque in the US – but it's worth bearing in mind, North America’s SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) power rating system differs significantly from the DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung, or German Institute for Standardization) system used in Europe and here.

The six-speed automatic has been switched out for a 10-speed automatic, while the six-speed manual remains as an option.

An active valve exhaust system is expected to make the Mustang even louder from the outside, which will please those that think it doesn't quite have enough bark at the moment.

New shock absorbers and a new cross-axis joint at the rear are expected to boost lateral stiffness, along with the use of new stabiliser bars. Also available as an option abroad are MagneRide active dampers.

Inside the cabin there aren't a huge number deal of changes, but buyers are expected to have the option of a 12.0-inch colour LCD display to replace the traditional dials and gauges.

On the safety front, Mustang now comes standard with autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection and lane assist, which has helped boost the ANCAP safety rating from two stars to three stars.

Ford has updated the restraint system to prevent the airbag bottoming out for driver and passenger, but the 32 per cent child occupant rating prevents the Mustang from scoring any higher than three stars.

Want to get your hands on one? There's still a bit of time to kill.

"We are excited for the 2018 Mustang to arrive in Australia! We expect vehicles on the ground in the second half of 2018," said Jasmine Mobarek, Ford Australia's communications manager.

Do you like the look of the 2018 Ford Mustang? Have you been holding out to buy the 2018 model over the current-generation?
