2018 BMW X2 unveiled – UPDATE

After much teasing, the new BMW X2 has been revealed as a 'coupe' companion to the X1 crossover.

Described by the company as the "cool X" model, the new X2 features an upside down kidney grille, as well as a sportier roof line and more aggressive styling than its X1 sibling.

There's also BMW badging on the C-pillar, which is said to link the X2 to classic coupes from the company's past.

Measuring 4360mm long, 1824mm wide and 1526mm tall, riding on a 2670mm wheelbase, the X2 is 79mm shorter overall, has an 86mm lower roof height and is 3mm wider than the X1. Both vehicles ride on the same wheelbase.

With the rear seats up, the X2's boot will swallow 470 litres of gear, rising to 1355L with the rear pews folded flat.

The X2 will be offered in three trim grades: base, M Sport, and M Sport X, which is said to be inspired by rally racing. The M Sport variants aggressive bumper treatments, larger 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels, and sit on a stiffer suspension setup that drops the car by 10mm.

They also lose the black sill and wheel arch cladding from the base model. M Sport cars feature body colour trim, and the M Sport X gets grey cladding.

When it goes on sale in Europe, the X2 will be available with two diesel powertrain options and a solitary petrol engine. The sDrive20i features a 141kW/280Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol mill driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Both diesels are fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine hooked up to all four wheels and an eight-speed automatic. The xDrive20d model has 140kW/400Nm, while the xDrive25d has 170kW/450Nm on tap.

Later, BMW will add the three-cylinder sDrive18i, and four-cylinder xDrive20i, sDrive18d and xDrive18d drivetrain options.

Available features in the X2 range include LED tail-lights, LED headlights, colour head-up display, LED interior mood lighting, Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay compatibility, rear-view camera, satellite navigation, and a panoramic sunroof.

A 6.5-inch infotainment screen sits atop the dashboard in base models, but pricier versions get an 8.8-inch unit.

Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection at urban speeds, and semi-automated parking assistance are among the safety features available on the X2.

Australia

The new BMW X2 goes on sale globally from March 2018. We're waiting to hear back from the company's local arm about local timing.

UPDATE: The X2 will arrive in Australia in the "mid first half" of 2018.
