Opel Flextreme GT/E concept – Geneva 2010

The Opel Flextreme GT/E concept is the star of the Opel stand at the Geneva Motor Show with the five-door, mid-sized, plug-in coupe epitomising the brand's renewed focus on emotional appeal, efficient environmental performance and expressive design.

The GT/E concept is driven by the same Voltec powertrain as the Chevrolet Volt, but despite being 4.76m long Opel says it is still capable of being driven electrically for 60km and for more than 500km with range extension at an average fuel consumption of 1.6 litres/100km while producing less than 40g/km CO2.

This is thanks to its superior 0.22Cd aerodynamics packaging which includes vertical panels that extend behind the rear wheel arches at speeds above 50km to reduce turbulence, extensive carbon fibre panelling, low rolling resistance tyres wrapped around narrow 21in alloys, and the lack of wing mirrors.

Opel also insists that its top speed exceeds 200km/h and 0-100km/h is achieved in less than nine seconds.

Lithium-ion batteries that can be fast-charged in less than three hours combine with the 120kW/370Nm electric drive unit and 53kW 1.4-litre generator to power the front wheels.

Although Opel says the Flextreme GT/E concept will never make production, it admits the car glimpses over the horizon to the future of General Motors products and proudly shows that electric cars do not need to be boring.
