Subaru VIZIV Performance concept revealed

Sports sedan concept hints at next-gen WRX

The Subaru VIZIV Performance concept has been revealed at the Tokyo motor show this week, previewing a future performance sedan from the Japanese manufacturer.

Designed to embody "the brand’s vision for the future of making cars that deliver enjoyment and peace of mind to its customers", the VIZIV Performance is the first sedan in Subaru's 'Vision for Innovation' concept series, which has only included crossovers thus far.

In terms of its design, the VIZIV Performance maintains a version Subaru's corporate grille up front, though the slim headlights and large intakes are far bolder than anything seen on its production models. There are also massively flared guards at the front and rear to give the Performance a wider, more athletic stance.

At the rear, the tail-lights are joined by a single red strip running through the bootlid, while the quad-tipped exhaust is now arranged in a diagonally-stacked design like the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV or the Lexus F range.

Subaru says the VIZIV Performance features the company's trademark symmetrical all-wheel drive system and a horizontally-opposed boxer engine, but hasn't mentioned any specifics about capacities or outputs.

Measuring 4630mm long, 1950mm wide and 1430mm tall with a 2730mm wheelbase, the VIZIV Performance is similar in size to the current WRX, albeit significantly wider and with 80mm extra space between the axles.

Other highlights include the latest EyeSight driver-assistance technologies, which should be rolling out across the brand's portfolio "around 2020".

We reckon the VIZIV Performance concept is a preview to the next-generation WRX, which should be revealed in the coming year or so. Going by previous form, however, Subaru can be expected to significantly soften the overall design of this concept for production, which could mean it looks a little less sexy than the car on show in Tokyo.
