Mazda Kai concept leaked

Slinky hatchback previews next-gen Mazda 3

Update: The Mazda Kai Concept has been officially revealed, full details here

The Mazda Kai Concept has been leaked ahead of its official debut at the Tokyo motor show later this month.

A series of images, published on Autotijd, offer a complete look at the concept, which likely previews the styling direction of the next Mazda 3.

The car's nose is dominated by a large, sportier take on the Mazda corporate grille, which flows into a set of squinty recessed headlights. There's also an aggressive splitter jutting from the bottom of the front end.

In profile, the car is almost completely devoid of creases and sharp lines, instead favouring smooth surfaces. With swollen wheel arches and large 10-spoke wheels, it certainly doesn't lack for presence.

The windscreen of the concept flows into glass panels above the driver and passenger, both of which run the length of the roof. Other neat concept-car flourishes include slimline cameras in place of the door mirrors, and flush-fitting door handles.

Down back, there are brake lights similar to those from the RX-Vision Concept revealed in Tokyo two years ago.

Although it's a more aggressive, showy take on the Mazda 'Kodo' design philosophy, the overall look isn't too far removed from the current 3.

Behind the wheel, drivers are faced with a pared-back interior setup. The three-spoke steering wheel sits in front of a conventional instrument binnacle, while the widescreen infotainment system is neatly integrated into the dashboard – no awkward floating screens here, folks.

Trimmed in red-and-black leather, the whole cabin is oriented toward the driver.

The Mazda Kai Concept will make its debut at the Tokyo motor show. Stay tuned for all the latest from the floor.
