2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class first drive: video
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class claims to be the world's first 'premium' global dual-cab ute, so Jez Spinks flew over to the the global launch in Chile to discover if the new ute lives up to the hype.

Here's a quick recap of what we know so far:
Arriving in 'early 2018', the Mercedes-Benz X-Class will be offered in three trim levels locally - Pure, Progressive and Power. There will also be three powertrains on offer, a 2.3-litre turbo-diesel, a 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel, and a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel.
The 2.3-litre mills are both sourced from Renault-Nissan, shared with the X-Class's base car - the Nissan Navara. Buyers of the entry-level engine will have 120kW of power and 403Nm of torque available to their right foot, while the twin-turbo version ups outputs to 140kW and 450Nm.
Meanwhile, the 3.0-litre V6 oiler is a Mercedes-Benz engine, developing a healthy 190kW of power and 550Nm of torque, making it the current power king in the dual-cab ute segment.
Depending on variant, there will be the option of a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed automatic, along with the choice of rear-wheel drive or selectable four-wheel drive.
Standard equipment across the range includes a rear-view camera, lane keep assist, forward collision warning with low-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB), along with seven airbags (dual front, front side, full-length curtain and driver's knee).
Also included from the base level is a 7.0-inch floating tablet-style infotainment system with bluetooth phone and audio streaming, USB input, a four-speaker audio system and 17-inch wheels.
Higher-spec models offer more luxurious items like leather trim, eight-speaker audio, electrically-adjustable seats, climate control air-conditioning, LED headlights and tail-lights, a 360-degree camera system, Mercedes-Benz's Comand infotainment setup, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels, along with front and rear parking sensors.
We're expecting pricing to kick off around the $50,000 mark for the entry-level Pure, climbing to $70,000 and beyond for the flagship Power with the V6 turbo-diesel engine.
