2018 Chevrolet Traverse SUP Concept revealed for SEMA

Chevrolet has treated the 2018 Traverse to a surf-oriented makeover ahead of the 2017 SEMA show in Las Vegas later this month.

Designed to showcase what owners can create using the GM accessories catalogue, the 'Traverse SUP' is an SUV dedicated to stand-up paddleboarding.

On the outside, it rides on 20-inch alloy wheels finished in black to match the new grille and badges.

There are side steps for easier entry into the high-riding cabin, along with a cargo liner and all-weather floor mats. The paddleboard is housed in a Thule rack for easy access.

Not exactly pulse-raising stuff, then, but all eminently practical if you’re spending lots of time in the sun, surf and sand.

Beyond the dealer-fit accessories, there are wave-inspired graphics running along the side of the Traverse, in addition to yellow stripes.

The blacked-out body trims and fog-light bezels are both unique to the SEMA show car, as are the dark grey trim pieces scattered around the body.

Although we’re getting the smaller GMC Acadia (badged as a Holden, of course) in Australia, the larger Traverse is a US-only proposition at the moment. Power comes from a choice of two engines: a 190kW/400Nm turbocharged four-cylinder, or a naturally-aspirated V6 with 227kW and 351Nm.

The SUP concept is one of 20 Chevrolet vehicles set to feature at SEMA this year. Most are designed to highlight factory-approved accessories, so don't expect any Hyundai or Kia-style madness.
