2018 Toyota JPN Taxi revealed

The production version of the Toyota JPN Taxi has been unveiled ahead of its in-the-flesh debut at the 2017 Tokyo motor show.

Inspired by the original 2013 concept, the production JPN Taxi doesn't look much different to the revised 2015 preview. All three take their inspiration from London's famous black taxi cabs.

As with the earlier concepts, the production car features a stepped roof, large windows, and a design that places space efficiency ahead of aesthetics.

A 1.3 metre-tall powered sliding rear door on the left side, a low, flat floor, grab handles, and LED illuminated seat belts should ensure easy ingress and egress from the vehicle.

Behind the rear seats is a boot with 401 litres of space according to the VDA standard, with space for two large suitcases or four golf bags.

The JPN Taxi will replace the rear-drive Comfort and Crown Comfort models as Toyota's offering to taxi owners and fleets in Japan.

Where the old three-box sedan came with a choice of LPG and diesel motors, the front-wheel drive JPN Taxi will, initially at least, only be offered with a LPG-compatible hybrid drivetrain featuring a 1.5-litre petrol engine.

Given the rigours of life as a taxi, the JPN Taxi features easily replaceable multi-part bumpers, and a "no-maintenance power water pump in the auxiliary belt system".

The JPN Taxi will be available in two trim levels: the 3,277,800 yen ($36,900) Nagomi and 3,499,200 yen ($39,400) Takumi.

For your extra yen, the Takumi model gains body-coloured bumpers, alloy wheels, LED headlamps, an extra set of vertical tail-lights, rear-seat air vents, a ceiling-mounted air circulator, and rear heated seats.

Standard features on all models include six airbags, and the Toyota Safety Sense C collision avoidance package.

No word yet on whether the JPN Taxi will offered outside of Japan, but the Comfort and Crown Comfort taxi specials were a common sight in Singapore and Hong Kong.
