2018 Porsche 911 Carrera T revealed, arriving Down Under Q2 2018

Porsche has unveiled the 2018 911 Carrera T, a pared-back take on the base 911.

Under the bonnet is the same 3.0-litre turbocharged flat-six as the base 911, making 272kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

It’s hooked up to a seven-speed manual gearbox with a shortened gear ratios, while the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission will also be available.

In manual guise, the shortened ratios and new diff help the car hit 100km/h from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster than the regular Carrera. The PDK deals with the same sprint in just 4.2 seconds, and keeps pulling to 200km/h in 15.1 seconds.

Top speed is rated at ‘over 290km/h’ regardless of which transmission is specified.

The car rides on a (usually optional) Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) chassis, with 20mm-lower suspension and the Sport Chrono package - also normally a cost option. Rear-axle steering, an option usually reserved for Carrera S buyers, is also included in the Carrera T.

Beyond the mix-and-match chassis specification, the car has been treated to a host of lightweight touches. The rear and side windows are now made of lightweight glass, and there’s less sound deadening than you get in the standard car.

You’ll need to leave the kids at home, because there are no rear seats, and the radio has been removed to shed a few more kilos. It can be re-installed as a no-cost option. All these measures are similar to those taken in the 911 R.

The net result is a 20kg weight saving over the standard 911, with the car weighing in at 1425kg.

If the noisier, two-seat interior doesn’t alert you to the fact the T isn’t a regular Carrera, the seats have a special Sport-Tex trim in their centres, and the door handles have been swapped for fabric pulls. The manual gear stick is also shorter than standard.

Cars with the optional 'T interior package' also get Racing Yellow, Guards Red or GT Silver contrast highlights on the headrests, seatbelts, door pulls and seat centres to distinguish them from the 'regular' 911 Carrera.

From the outside, the 911 T can be distinguished from other 911 models by its front lip spoiler and grey exterior mirrors, along with 20-inch Carrera S wheels finished in grey. There are unique graphics running down the side of the car, and the engine cover trades horizontal cooling slats for vertical units.

A centre-mounted sports exhaust is standard, too. The car can be ordered in Black, Lava Orange, Guards Red, Racing Yellow, White, Miami Blue, or, if you're after a metallic colour, Carrara White, Jet Black or GT Silver.

The Carrera T is confirmation of reports in September that a permanent 'purist' version of the Porsche 911 would join the range.

Australia

The 911 Carrera T will be priced from $238,400 plus on-road costs in Australia, with local deliveries expected to start in the second quarter next year.
