Mitsubishi Emirai 4 concept revealed for Tokyo

The Mitsubishi Emirai 4 concept has been revealed by Mitsubishi Electric ahead of a debut at the upcoming Tokyo motor show.

Previewing the company's driver assistance technology, the Emirai 4 is a futuristic roadster that "draws upon" electrification, autonomous driving and connected technologies.

There are no details on what powers the concept, but there are several human machine interface (HMI) features like a head-up display with augmented reality, a sliding knob to toggle various vehicle functions so the driver doesn't have to take their eyes off the road, and a 'crossed images display' that creates a 3D images of the surrounding environment using mirrors and LCD panels.

Another headlining feature is the driver sensing system, which uses a wide-angle interior camera to monitor both the driver and passenger.

By detecting the heads and posture of occupants, the system determines whether the driver is being dangerous behind the wheel, and will switch between automated and manual driving accordingly.

Finally, sensors in the vehicle's body can detect when a door is about to be opened, activating an indicator that is projected on to the road and another that projects onto the car's body to alert nearby vehicles and pedestrians.

The Emirai 4 is the second concept vehicle Mitsubishi has confirmed for the Tokyo event, the first being the electric and autonomous-capable e-Evolution concept (above) that looks set to preview the future of the company's iconic Evolution nameplate.
