Aston Martin Project Neptune revealed

British marque has a crack at $5 million submarines

The Aston Martin Project Neptune submarine concept has been revealed this week, showcasing the marque's ability to branch out into other areas of the luxury world.

Created in collaboration with Florida-based submarine manufacturer Triton, the three-person Project Neptune concept will lead to an "exclusive, strictly limited-edition vehicle, combining Aston Martin's design, materials and craftsmanship expertise with Triton's core strengths in the design, manufacture and operation of submersible vehicles for researchers, explorers and superyacht owners.

The vehicle is the first to come out of the company's new Aston Martin Consulting sub-division, which "provides design, engineering and manufacturing services to select industries".

According to the press release, the new firm distills "the brand's essence into exciting new projects without compromising Aston Martin's fundamental qualities", while going beyond the automotive sector as demonstrated by Project Neptune.

"Project Neptune is defined by its sleek, elegant exterior," said Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's executive vice president and chief creative officer.

"We have used forms and proportions that express the same devotion to design, engineering and beauty that shape our cars, such as the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar project."

Meanwhile, Triton Submarines LLC says: "together with Aston Martin, [Triton] is ready to introduce the new generation of yacht owners to the deep ocean, greatly enhancing the superyacht ownership experience".

The Project Neptune concept comes a year after the British sports car manufacturer created the AM37 powerboat with Dutch boat builders, Quintessence Yachts. Like numerous luxury car companies, it looks like Aston Martin is really trying to expand its range beyond the road.

Want to buy a Project Neptune? According to overseas reports, the production version of the bespoke submarine is expected to cost around US$4 million ($5.12 million).
