2018 Genesis G70: Australian details

The all-new 2018 Genesis G70 has only just been revealed, but CarAdvice can tell you what to expect when the all-new mid-sized luxury sedan arrives in the first quarter of next year.

The Australian arm of Genesis has confirmed the new model will take on the German establishment with aggressive pricing for the all-new mid-sized G70 sedan, and the choice of two punchy powertrains.

The lower-output engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, with 190kW of power and 353Nm of torque. The big dog is the 3.3-litre bi-turbo V6, with 272kW of power and 510Nm of torque. No matter the engine, there's an eight-speed automatic transmission standard. The claimed 0-100km/h time of the V6 is a rapid 4.7 seconds.

Fuel use for the V6 is expected to be rated at about 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres, while the four-pot is expected to use between 9.3L and 9.6L per 100km, depending on the size of the wheels fitted (18s or 19s are expected).

Nothing is set in stone as yet, but we expect the new model will start at or below $55,000 for the entry-grade version, while higher-spec models with the more powerful engine could creep towards $75,000 or beyond.

It is likely there will be three different trim grades available for the G70, offering plenty of choice for consumers.

The Australian-delivered models will feature the company’s local steering and suspension tune, with the 3.3-litre versions of the G70 seeing the standard inclusion of Hyundai Motor Corporation's adaptive suspension system (known as ECS, for electronically-controlled suspension).

That system has been put through the same extensive testing as Hyundai’s other impressive offerings – the 2017 Hyundai i30 being the most recent example, and the lower-spec versions with the 2.0-litre engine will have a conventional spring/damper setup.

Bill Thomas, general manager external affairs for Hyundai Motor Company Australia, acknowledged the new model will have fight for its spot in the local market.

"We are very aware we are entering an incredibly competitive segment with G70 - in many ways it's the toughest market segment of  them all, where customers are extremely discerning and where luxury and refinement must be delivered in a compact and affordable package," Thomas said.

"But we are quietly confident in our ability to design and engineer a high-quality luxury product. The Genesis G70 showcases that ability."

The Genesis G70 could be seen as the posh fraternal twin to the Kia Stinger. It shares the same underpinnings, and the same engines and transmissions. And given it is launching within months of that headline-grabbing model, it’ll be interesting to see if this model can garner as much interest from consumers.

Stay tuned for full pricing and specs closer to the Genesis G70’s launch in Australia.

The G70 goes on sale in Korea from September 20, with other world markets to follow. Australia will see its first Genesis G70 models in the first quarter of 2018.

Rival movements

The station of the nation in the mid-sized premium car market sees the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (starting at $61,400 plus on-road costs) leading the pack with 5643 sales year-to-date, with its more affordable (and officially smaller) companion the CLA ($52,500), listing 2303 sales in its own right.

The BMW 3 Series ($57,300) is well behind on 1865 sales - not including the 3 Series Gran Turismo (91 sales) - and the Audi A4 ($55,500) has claimed 1610 sales thus far this year. The Lexus IS ($59,340) is on 1129, and Jaguar's XE ($62,800) is just moving the needle with 640 sales. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia ($59,895) is close behind on 405 sales.

Infiniti's Q50 ($53,900) could be an easy rival for the G70 to pass, with just 117 sales in 2017 so far.
