Renault Symbioz house and autonomous car concept unveiled

The unique Renault Symbioz car and house concept has been revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.

The Symbioz car is said to provide a clue about an autonomous electric vehicle going into production around 2023, as well as some of the company's thinking of about technologies and design elements it will employ up until around 2030.

According to Renault, the Symbioz vehicle has been designed to act as an extension of your home whenever it's autonomously driving you around, and its interior is inspired by modern living room design themes.

When parked at home, the Symbioz is said to act as a moveable and modular multi-purpose room. To that end, the Symbioz house includes a lifting platform allowing the car to be a part of the living room, bedroom or rooftop terrace.

Depending on one's needs, the car can be opened up as a lounge, or closed off for private work, study or quiet time.

The Symbioz car is an internet-connected vehicle, and is in constant communication with its companion house. Entertainment, lighting and mood settings can be seamlessly transferred between car and house.

As a planned trip approaches, the car will be automatically lowered onto the ground floor. The car is also charged up automatically overnight in advance of a big trip, with the house shut down and closed up as you depart.

Power is shared between the house and the car, and the car's batteries automatically power the house if there's an blackout. The car can also power the house manually at its owner's request.

The company has yet to provide specifications about the Symbioz demonstration car's drivetrain or its autonomous driving functions.

Renault has promised to release more details about the Symbioz vehicle later this year, probably around the time it begins offering test drives of the car.

The show vehicle was developed by Renault in conjunction with a number of partners, including LG for the human-machine interface, game developer Ubisoft for the self-driving mode's on-board virtual reality experience, and TomTom for geo-positioning.
