The manufacturer reports that affected units may experience diode thermal fatigue due to cyclical loads induced by the power steering.
If the diodes fail, the alternator will no longer supply the vehicle with electrical energy, potentially causing the vehicle to stall without warning - posing a crash hazard.
Additionally, failed diodes may develop a resistive short circuit which could cause heat, smoke, even a fire originating within the alternator.
