BMW CEO, Norbert Reithofer, said the quality achieved by the German factory was the main reason behind the decision.
“The BMW Group will build the car of the future in Leipzig with high-tech innovations from Bavaria.“We have a tried and tested production network here and high levels of education and outstanding competencies at our disposal,” Mr Reithofer said.
BMW is yet to decide on a production name for the Megacity, but intends to release a complete range of EVs based on a compact city car which is due first.
BMW revealed the 1 Series coupe-based ActiveE electric concept at January’s Detroit Motor Show.
It plans to test a new fleet of ActiveE vehicles equipped with the Megacity electric powertrain next year in preparation for full-scale production around two years further down the track.
