2018 BMW 8 Series spied with production lights

The new BMW 8 Series is inching its way towards production, with the latest prototype spied sporting production-ready head- and tail-lights.

The new range-topping coupe should look broadly similar to the 8 Series Concept unveiled at this year's Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Although the boot, flanks and doors all feature false body panels stapled on top of the real things, we expect the styling of the production car to be toned down significantly from the concept.

Up front, the 8 Series looks as though it will be available with the company's Laserlight technology. At the rear, there's a slimline set of LED tail-lights stretching into the boot lid.

Drivetrains for the new 8 Series will probably be largely borrowed from the 7 Series. The large sedan features turbocharged four-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines, as well as turbo-diesel six-cylinder motors and a plug-in hybrid.

BMW has already teased the M8 variant. Although we don't know for sure which engine will power it, a version of the upcoming M5's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 seems likely.

In the new M5, the twin-turbo V8 will make at least 450kW/700Nm, and be fitted with a standard eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

The production 8 Series will make its debut next year.
