Ford has issued a recall for 42,988 examples of its Focus small car built between 2011 and 2015, over concerns the fuel tank could crack and leak.

The Blue Oval reports that certain vehicles "under particular environmental conditions" may ingest excessive levels of dust, which may block the carbon canister during a purge cycle, causing the fuel tank to reach vacuum levels that exceed design limits.

If the condition occurs, the fuel tank may crack, resulting in a fuel leak. A fuel leak near an ignition source could pose a fire risk.

Affected Ford Focus models were built from 12 April 2012 through 29 September 2015. The VIN list for these vehicles can be viewed here.

Owners of the recalled units will be contacted by Ford Australia via mail, and will be advised to contact their local dealer to arrange the inspection and repair of their Focus.
