2018 Hyundai i40 Tourer spied

A new or updated Hyundai i40 Tourer has been spied undergoing testing in southern Europe.

With the heavy amount of disguise layered on top of the new Hyundai i40 wagon, we can make out the car's overall profile, but not much else.

Up front, the new i40 should feature a version of Hyundai's cascading grille, a thinner headlight setup, and LED driving and fog lights.

From the side, the i40 wagon prototype looks to be around the same size as today's car. The window shapes, doors and wing mirrors seem to indicate the i40 could be in line for a significant facelift rather than a next-generation model.

Should this i40 wagon be a harbinger of a new model, it should be lighter than the current car thanks to the use of high-strength steel and other lightweight materials. Power will likely come from a selection of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

So far this year, Hyundai has sold 556 i40 sedans and wagons. Despite making its debut back in 2011, it's only 85 units behind the larger and newer Sonata, which was launched in 2014. Sonata sales may get a shot in the arm when the facelifted model arrives down under during the third quarter of this year.

With a 2.2 and 2.6 per cent share of the medium car market, respectively, neither vehicle are close to challenging the runaway leader, the Toyota Camry, which has 14,083 sales against its name or 56.9 per cent of the medium segment.

The pair of Hyundais is also streets behind the Mazda 6 (2114), Ford Mondeo (1863), Volkswagen Passat (1541), Subaru Liberty (1344), and Skoda Octavia (1002).
