BMW i8 Protonic models confirmed for Australia

$303,300 price-tag for special edition hybrid supercar

Just a handful of BMW i8 Protonic special edition models will be sold in Australia, at a cost of $303,300 plus on-road costs.

The Protonic versions of the BMW i8 will be sold in extremely limited numbers. Only five will be available in Frozen Black (available to order now) while a single version in Frozen Yellow will be arrive in November. Yep, just the one - like BMW Australia says, it hits the mark for "ultimate i8 collector status".

It's not just the paint that separates the Protonic versions of the hybrid supercar from the regular models from the outside - it has distinct 20-inch matte-finish light alloy wheels.

The interior sees a bunch of changes as well: there are model-specific touches such as new door-sill finishers, Amido leather trim on the seats and i8 logo embossing in the head-rests, contrasting grey seatbelts and yellow stitching highlights and piping on the floor mats. The roof lining is "soft anthracite" in colour.

Nothing changes in terms of the drivetrain, with the i8 retaining its entertaining 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol-electric drivetrain. The rear-mounted petrol engine teams with an electric motor at the front axle, with combined outputs of 266kW of power and 570Nm of torque, and a fuel use claim of only 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres.
