MG planning new sports car for 2014

After almost two years of rumours, rejuvenated British automotive icon MG is working on its first new sports car in 15 years to replace the dated MG TF roadster.

Rumoured to be front-engined, rear-wheel drive and open-topped to directly compete with the Mazda MX-5, MG insiders say the intention is to have the car on the road by 2014.

The current platform dates back to 1995 when the MG F was launched, and MG admits it does not expect the current TF to last beyond the end of this year.

That means the sports car manufacturer will not actually be manufacturing any sports cars for at least three years, rather preferring to focus its attention on the new MG6 and a small city car to be built in the UK.

MG plans to build the new sports car in Birmingham, England, as the brand’s Chinese owner, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC), attempts to reintroduce MG throughout Europe.
