2019 Audi A3 to drop three-door, may gain five-door liftback – report

The next-generation Audi A3 will reportedly lose its three-door hatch body style.

Officials from Audi has confirmed the variant's demise to Autocar. The decision to drop the model from the next-generation's range is said to be driven by declining sales for the A3 three-door, and for three-door hatches in general.

The three-door A3 was last sold in Australia in 2011. The magazine understands the new A3 five-door hatch will make its debut in 2019.

With the A4 growing ever larger, and strong sales in the USA and China, the A3 range will again feature a four-door sedan. The sedan is said to be larger than today's car, and should go on sale in 2020.

While cutting the three-door may help to declutter the Audi range a little bit, the company is reportedly mulling adding a five-door liftback to the A3 line. It's possible the liftback could wear the Sportback name currently used on the five-door A3 hatch.

If the A3 liftback comes to be, it will be pitched as a sportier alternative to the regular five-door hatch and four-door sedan, with the Mercedes-Benz CLA its most natural competitor.

Should it be given the green light, the A3 liftback could make its debut by 2021.
