2018 Opel Insignia GSi Sports Tourer spied at the Nurburgring

The 2018 Opel Insignia GSi Sports Tourer has been spied completely undisguised this week around the famed Nurburgring race track.

With the liftback version having already been revealed in Holden, Opel and Buick guises, this is the first look at what the sports treatment will look like on the more practical wagon body - and it looks boss.

Like its smaller twin, the Sports Tourer wears a more aggressive front bumper with faux side air intakes, 20-inch alloy wheels, a unique rear bumper treatment with trapezoidal dual tailpipe trims, and more prominent side skirts.

In Opel form, the Insignia GSi will feature a 2.0-litre turbo four, developing 195kW of power and 400Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Meanwhile, the Holden Commodore VXR uses a naturally-aspirated 235kW/381Nm 3.6-litre V6, paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Drive is sent to all four wheels, utilising a Twinster system that's similar to the one used in the Ford Focus RS hot hatch.

While the Commodore liftback has been confirmed for our market in VXR trim, the Sportwagon wasn't revealed alongside the sedan-like hatch, leaving a cloud of uncertainty as to whether the lion brand will offer a performance version here.

We're waiting to hear back from Holden regarding local potential, so stay tuned for an update.
