2018 Honda NSX GT3 racer readying for global assault

The Honda NSX GT3 race car is now available to order worldwide, for privateers and customer teams keen to race the track-only Japanese supercar in 2018.

Already hitting tracks across the US as part of its inaugural season in the North American International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the GT3 version of the road-going Honda NSX hybrid supercar is now eligible to race in more than 24 FIA-sanctioned race events around the world, including the Nurburgring 24 Hour, Blancpain GT Asia Series and GT Asia Championship, Japan’s Super GT (in the GT300 class), and the Australian GT Championship here in Oz.

Italy’s JAS Motorsport are the people tasked with assembling and supporting the NSX GT3 racecars across Europe, Asia, and South America, with Honda Performance Development (HPD) and M-TEC (Mugen) also on board across the globe.

Honda Europe says an initial batch of 12 NSX GT3 cars will be produced in time for the start of the 2018 race season, with all race engines to be built alongside their production car counterparts at Ohio’s Anna Engine Plant in the US.

Although the GT3 cars use a powerplant derived from the standard car’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 – employing the same design specifications, block, heads, valve train, crankshaft, pistons, and dry-sump lubrication system as the road car – the racer ditches the hybrid model’s nine-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, three electric motors, and Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system in favour of an XTRAC semi-automatic six-speed sequential racing gearbox and rear-wheel drive.

Finished in exposed carbon-fibre and decked out with a “state-of-the-art chassis and aerodynamic package”, the 1240kg Honda NSX GT3 car weighs 540kg less than its road-car sibling.

Additionally, it also features SACHS five-way adjustable dampers, Brembo brakes – comprising six-piston calipers and 390mm discs up front and four-piston calipers and 355mm discs out back – and 18-inch forged aluminium wheels (measuring 12-inches-wide at the front and 13-inches-wide at the rear) wrapped in Pirelli P Zero slicks.

If you’re interested, a race-ready 2018 Honda NSX GT3 car could be yours for a starting price of 465,000 euro ($680,000) – up $260,000 on the $420,000 local Aussie price for the standard NSX road car.
