2018 Mitsubishi ‘Expander’ people mover teased

Mitsubishi Motors Indonesia has teased its "next generation MPV" ahead of its official debut at the 2017 Jakarta motor show, which starts on August 10.

The new car is expected to feature three rows of seating, the ability to transport seven or eight passengers, and will draw heavily from last year's XM Concept.

A source has informed AutonetMagz the new car will be known as the Expander, at least in Indonesia. The Expander is said to feature a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, front-wheel drive, and a continuously variable transmission.

From the teaser images the company released overnight, the front doors look almost identical to ones found on the new Eclipse Cross mini-SUV.

Given the fact these two cars were some of the last models to be developed by cash-strapped Mitsubishi prior to its takeover by Nissan, it's highly likely the two vehicles are closely related.

Compared to the Eclipse Cross, the Expander looks to have a longer wheelbase, significantly longer rear doors, a more upright hind section, and a more conventionally styled tailgate.

Going by these teaser images, top-spec versions of the Expander will come with LED head- and tail-lights, and an aggressively styled front fascia with the company's Dynamic Shield grille.

Australia

We know the crossover will be built in Indonesia. It will likely be sold throughout much of south-east Asia, where body-on-frame SUVs and affordable people movers are popular.

It's not known at this stage whether the Expander, or whatever it will be called, will be sold in Australia or other developed markets.

The heavily updated Grand Lancer was unveiled earlier this year, but will be limited to Taiwan, China and, possibly, other parts of Asia.
