Yes it’s a mouthful, but with just 10 of 500 destined for Australia the John Cooper Works WC50 will become one of the most exclusive MINIs in history.
MINI national manager, Justin Hocevar, explained the WC50 pays homage to 50 years of motorsport for the famous brand.
“Obviously MINI has enjoyed a rich motorsport history all over the world, however there’s a particularly proud heritage of motorsport for MINI in Australia and the arrival of this special edition, including the 500th car, is yet another testament to that,” Mr Hocevar said.
He said the arrival of the WC50 marked a significant milestone for MINI Australia and reaffirmed the importance of the local market on a global scale.
“This is a major coup for the Australian subsidiary to secure these highly sought after special edition models. The no. 1 car is destined for the BMW Group museum and the 500th will find an admiring home in Australia.”
Based on the standard MINI John Cooper Works, the WC50 is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder with twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection. It produces 155kW and 260Nm of torque which can be briefly increased to 280Nm using the overboost feature.
Paired with a six-speed manual transmission, the WC50 is propelled from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds and winds all the way out to its top speed of 238km/h. For more real-world occasions, it achieves 6.9 litres/100km combined and emits 165g/km CO2 under EU testing.
The Connaught Green paint scheme revives the famous British racing colours of the 1950s and 1960s, while the Pepper White bonnet stripes (adorned with the signature of John Cooper) mirror the colour concept of the Cooper F1 cars.
The dark, menacing theme of the unique aero package and Jet Black alloys is carried on into the black housed and surfaced bi-xenon headlights and driving lights and further emphasised by numerous weight-saving carbon-fibre features.
Inside the racing pedigree is upheld by more carbon fibre, red and black leather seats and surfaces, and a John Cooper Works insert on the alacantra-rimmed steering wheel. Side scuttle finishers with unique numbering complete the package and indentify each WC50 as an individual entity of an exclusive limited edition.
MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 will debut before Australian crowds at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide (March 11-14) and again at the Melbourne Formula One Grand Prix (March 25-28).
The other nine are destined to arrive in the second quarter of 2010, with details of pricing and the customer allocation process to be announced closer to arrival.
