2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class gains improved voice control, other upgrades

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been given a slight upgrade just a year into this generation's life.

The stand out item is the E-Class' upgraded Linguatronic voice recognition unit, which can now control features beyond the infotainment and navigation systems.

Voice accessible items now include the climate control settings, seat heaters and coolers, demisters, current speed limit, next service timing, and other convenience, lighting and car information features.

As part of the Linguatronic upgrade, users can interrupt verbal prompts and output, which should allow for faster and smoother experience. The number of available languages has been doubled from 11 to 22.

Other upgrades to the E-Class range include two USB ports for rear seat passengers, audio feedback for the steering wheel buttons, two new open-pore wood trim choices, new Nappa leather options in macchiato beige and yacht blue, and a boot closing assistant, which responds to a slight nudge on the lid.

The ambient lighting system now features 64 available colours, three zones and an automated dynamic mode, which can respond to changes, such as a raised climate control temperature setting, by briefly highlighting a zone in an appropriate colour, say red.

We're waiting to hear back from the company's local arm about local availability and timing of the E-Class' improved interior features and voice control system.
