2018 Ford Transit Custom facelift revealed

The heavily revised Ford Transit Custom has been unveiled overnight in Europe.

Following on from the updated Tourneo Custom, the Transit Custom facelift sports a redesigned front end with a new bonnet, headlight graphics, much larger grille, and a new front bumper.

Again the Transit Custom is offered in Europe with two wheelbase, and two roof height options.

Just as importantly, the dashboard has been completely redesigned, with the current van's phone keypad-inspired design ditched for a new unit heavily influenced by the latest generation Fiesta.

Along with a streamlined selection of buttons and controls, top-spec models feature a central free-standing pod housing an 8.0-inch touchscreen interface for the Sync 3 infotainment system.

Lower-end variants have a MyFord Dock section where smartphones, music players or portable navigation devices can be stored, charged and mounted.

The rejigged interior also features a flatter and plainer instrumentation area, a three-spoke steering wheel, USB and 12-volt sockets, a fold out cup holder below the gear shifter, 2.0-litre bottle holders at each of the dash, and redesigned door panels with more storage options.

Available tech features include a speed limiter that works in concert with the traffic sign recognition system, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping alert, side wind stabilisation, and automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

In Europe, motivation comes from the company's EcoBlue diesel engine family in 77kW, 96kW and 125kW trims. A Sport specification is available with the 125kW engine, and includes a stripe package. The Kombi M1 model is available with a rear air suspension setup.

For the Continent, there will also be a new Econetic model equipped with the 77kW motor, automatic engine stop/start, low rolling resistance tyres, Acceleration Control, and a fixed 100km/h speed limited. This model has a fuel economy rating of 5.6L/100km, a claimed improvement of around six per cent over today's most efficient Transit Custom variant.

The van's green bona fides will be further enhanced in 2019, when a plug-in hybrid variant joins the European range.

Australia

Just a few weeks ago Ford launched a revamped Transit Custom with a new diesel-auto drivetrain, and Ford Australia spokesperson Damion Smy has confirmed that's all we should expect for the immediate future.

"We have just launched the new 2.0-litre auto variant of Transit Custom and Transit, and we won’t be seeing any changes in the near future for Australian-spec models," he said.

The facelifted Custom Transit goes into production at the end of this year, but won't begin arriving in European dealerships and driveways until 2018.
