2018 Bentley Bentayga plug-in hybrid spied

The upcoming Bentley Bentayga plug-in hybrid has been spied during hot weather testing in southern Europe.

There's not much to distinguish this Bentayga prototype from the W12 and V8 diesel variants currently on sale.

The most obvious difference relates to the taped up Bentley badges, and missing fog light units. On closer inspection, this Bentayga also sports filler caps on both rear quarter panels.

According to the UK's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), this prototype has been registered since September 2016, and features a hybrid drivetrain with a 2.995-litre engine.

Reports indicate the Bentayga plug-in hybrid will be powered by a version of the drivetrain used in the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. That car features a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and delivers a total of 340kW/700Nm to all four wheels.

It's not clear if the Bentayga will actually feature a slightly enlarged version of the new Porsche V6 petrol engine, or whether the DVLA entry is not entirely correct.

By way of comparison, the Bentayga 6.0-litre W12 has 447kW/900Nm on tap, while the 4.0-litre V8 Diesel model is blessed with 320kW/900Nm thanks to two turbochargers and an electric compressor.

When the Bentayga plug-in hybrid goes on sale, it will complete a trifecta of firsts for the British marque, with the Bentayga being the company's first crossover, and its first vehicle to be offered with the option of a diesel engine, as well as its first hybrid drivetrain.

The Bentley Bentayga plug-in hybrid will likely make its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show in September.
