2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S pricing and specs

$164,900 starting point for sub-4.0-second SUV

Australian pricing and specifications for the soon-to-arrive 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S wagon and Coupe have been announced, with prices for the unashamedly brisk SUV kicking off at $164,900 (before on-road costs).

Employing the same twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine and nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission, both the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S wagon and Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S Coupe claim outputs of 375kW (between 5500-6250rpm) and 700Nm (between 1750rpm-4500rpm).

With help from the German marque’s 4Matic+ variable all-wheel-drive system, the four-door performance SUVs share a 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 270km/h.

Priced at $171,900 (before on-road costs), the GLC63 S Coupe will set you back $7000 more than its conventionally-styled companion, however, both are available with a $4500 Exterior Carbon Package, adding AMG carbon-fibre mirror housings and rear treatments – an extension for the wagon, a rear lip spoiler for the dearer Coupe.

For those keen to drop even more cash, an ‘Edition 1’ specification (pictured below) is also on offer, with the $10,900 option justified by distinctive paintwork, yellow sports stripes on the lower door and mirror housing, yellow-rimmed black 21-inch AMG cross-spoke alloy wheels, an AMG aerodynamics package and high-performance ceramic braking system, yellow-stitched black Nappa leather AMG performance seats, AMG matt carbon-fibre interior trim and yellow dash and door stitching, a ‘Dinamica’ AMG performance steering wheel, and yellow highlights in the instrument cluster.

Standard equipment will include adaptive air-spring suspension, a rear-axle limited-slip differential, and a high-performance composite braking system comprising 390mm discs up front and 360mm discs out back.

Once the first cars are delivered later this year, drivers will have five ‘AMG Dynamic Select’ drive modes to choose from - ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’, ‘Sport +’, ‘Race’, and ‘Individual’ - and a performance exhaust system to enjoy.

First revealed back in April, the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S range ensures the beastly mid-size SUV looks the part, with an AMG GT-style ‘Panamericana grille’, a large front splitter, and wider wheel arch claddings front and rear. Inside, a black Nappa leather and ‘Dinamica’ performance steering wheel joins leather-appointed AMG performance seats and an AMG instrument cluster with a ‘Race Timer’.

The new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S is the latest addition to the Mercedes-AMG line-up, with the ever-expanding range all part of the brand’s strategy to sell 100,000 cars in 2017.

Until the flagship GLC63 S lands on local soil, the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 will remain the top of the tree, with the 270kW/520Nm twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 GLC43 wagon and GLC43 Coupe priced from $102,400 (before on-road costs) and $109,900 (before on-road costs), respectively - both claiming to be able to hustle from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds.
