Audi Sport boss hints at future rear-wheel drive RS models

There could be rear-wheel drive Audi RS vehicles on the horizon, but we don't know how close these cars are to being production ready or which model lines will be involved.

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport, dropped this hint during a chat with AutoExpress at Goodwood Festival of Speed about Quattro GmbH rebranding itself to Audi Sport.

Above and below: Audi RS5.

Winkelmann said, "Quattro is the four-wheel-drive system and is one of the things that made Audi great, but in our opinion was not the right name for the company", because "I can imagine we can also have cars with rear-wheel drive or two-wheel drive in the future".

The Audi Sport chief didn't elaborate further on the company's plans for rear-wheel drive models, but if these vehicles do enter production they will likely be sold on the basis of driving pleasure rather than out-and-out performance.

It will also come at a time when models from key rivals, such as the next-generation BMW M5, switch to being exclusively all-wheel drive.

In the short term, Audi Sport plans on launching two new models at September's Frankfurt motor show, with hybrid drivetrains also being worked on for future RS vehicles.
