2018 Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport: Ingenium petrol engines here soon – UPDATE

The incoming 2018 Range Rover Evoque and 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport, due in Australia early in the fourth quarter of this year, will mark the first appearance of the company's Ingenium petrol engines.

Pricing will also creep up, with the Evoque to start from $58,690 before on-road costs for the Pure TD4 150 (up from $56,050) and the Discovery Sport SE TD4 150 from $56,595 before on-roads (up slightly from $56,355), both equipped with a nine-speed automatic. Ingenium petrol pricing has not been confirmed.

Both SUVs could already be had with the diesel version of Jaguar Land Rover's new-generation engines, but the petrol units, announced in September last year, have been a longer time coming.

The diesel Ingenium unit joined the local Evoque range in 2015, before making its way into the Discovery Sport a year later.

Now, with an all-Ingenium petrol and diesel line-up, both ranges promise to deliver a more refined, more efficient and - at the top end - more powerful package.

In Evoque and Disco Sport both, the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine is offered in two tunes: 177kW and 340Nm at the entry end - matching the numbers of the outgoing flagship petrol unit - while the more powerful 213kW and 400Nm version at the other.

Transmissions have not been confirmed, although last year's Ingenium petrol unveiling included the announced of JLR's new 'Transcend' eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The company claims the 177kW Ingenium engine will list fuel figures of 7.3L/100km (down from 7.8) in the Evoque and 6.4L/100km (down from 8.2) for the Disco Sport. These figures, though, are "subject to global homologation" and may creep up in Australian form.

In the Evoque, the 213kW turbo unit promises to accelerate the small SUV to from zero to 100km/h in 6.4 seconds - although JLR has not said if this number is specific to the three- or five-door body.

Opt for the Discovery Sport, and the 0-100km/h run is covered in an only slightly slower 6.8 seconds.

Upping the appeal for the more powerful Discovery Sport will be aDynamic body kit, adding sporting touches that befit the souped-up outputs. The pack includes 19-inch split-spoke 'Style 525' alloy wheels, larger air intakes, and a gloss black finish to the grille and side vents.

Other tweaks highlighted today include revised seats, with new foam for improved comfort, and improved lumbar support that now offers four-way instead of two-way control.
