The report suggests the future Polestar sports car could source its electric powertrain from upcoming EV variants of the Volvo V90 wagon and S90 sedan, due to start rolling out post 2019, however the basis of its platform is more up in the air.
Volvo is already working on combining EV powertrains with its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which is to underpin future XC40, S40 sedan, and V40 hatch and wagon models, although it is its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) that is used beneath the larger XC60, XC90, V90, and S90.
Apart from likely garnering help from the likes of Lotus, the speculated future sports car would also provide a solid branding link between the Polestar name and the rumoured Formula E entry of Polestar Cyan Racing – the team in charge of Volvo’s current crop of race cars.
Although Polestar is yet to make any announcement about the mooted sporty EV, Evo says Polestar fans should expect to see some sort of preview of the car before the end of the year.
Based in Gothenburg, in Sweden, Polestar has been Volvo Cars' performance partner for more than two decades, with the brand officially purchased by Volvo Cars in 2015.
Locally, Polestar engineered parts are available for the Volvo V40, S60, V60 and XC60, and comprise atheistic elements such as bodykits, spoilers, and wheels, as well as intake and exhaust components and chassis and suspension upgrades.
