Jim Richards to run 1985 JPS BMW 635 at Silverstone Classic

Jim Richards' legendary JPS BMW 635 CSi will be making an appearance at the Silverstone Classic in the UK, with its championship-winning driver behind the wheel.

In 1985, Richards drove the black and gold Beemer, for Frank Gardner Racing, to seven wins and won its first title in the Group A specification.

The Australian Touring Car BMW will have its inaugural trip outside of Australasia, and will also be Richards's first visit to the world's biggest historic racing event in the UK.

“I’ve been invited to Goodwood a couple of times but have never been to the Silverstone Classic before. I’m told it’s another of the great events, so I’m really looking forward to it," said Richards.

New Zealand collector, Peter Sturgeon, who bought the car after its racing days came to an end, was convinced by Richards and former Frank Gardner employee, Pip Baker, to revert to the Group C guise. It proved to be an excellent move.

“Pip adopted the project, and it took him almost 18 months to complete. It was worth all the effort, though, as the final result is utterly amazing,” said Sturgeon.

“The sound of the straight-six, twin-cam engine revving at more than 8000rpm is something all petrol heads should hear,” he continued. “In Group C form, this is the one and only 24-valve engined BMW 635 ever raced and to have Jim back driving it is very, very special.”

The JPS BMW will be competing for the JET Super Touring Car Trophy and will be against some nineties Super Tourers and Ford Sierra RS500s.

Silverstone Classic takes place from July 28-30. Tickets are on sale now.
