Subaru WRX STI Type RA set to debut June 8

Subaru has released a teaser image of the WRX STI Type RA, ahead of its debut this week on June 8.

The close-up photo shows a carbon-fibre roof, with a bonnet scoop in the background.

To hype up the production car, Subaru has also released a video of the race-modified WRX STI Type RA NBR Special being tested at Silverstone, and in less-than-perfect conditions at the Nuerburgring Nordschleife.

The video shows the race-modified WRX with a large rear diffuser and front splitter and a black Subaru-signed adjustable rear wing.

Not only is the Japanese company hoping to break the four-door sedan Nurburgring lap record at the infamous German track with the race-car, but the Type RA could be involved in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, which happens to be the same date as the production cars debut.

Subaru has held the record for a four-wheel vehicle there before with a modified WRX STI.

The Type RA could also feature gold 19-inch BBS rims, a carbon-fibre rear wing and sporty interior trims, including Recaro seats.

The meaning behind the Type RA NBR Special could represent "race-altered", "rally applicant" or "record attempt", and there's no guessing NBR stands for Nurburgring.

It comes after Subaru teased an image this week of an STI-branded rear wing that belongs to the BRZ, which we could see taking a swing at the upcoming Island of Man Tourist Trophy lap record.
